Porto Art Square x Cultural Affairs Event | 12th July

At FAUP – the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto – we publicly presented Porto Art Square: the city's new art quarter, which is still in the development phase.
Porto Art Square is emerging as a new hub of art and culture in the city of Porto, positioning itself as a future vibrant centre of creativity and contemporary expression. Anchored by an open-air gallery featuring murals and sculptures, and an annual cultural programme curated by the Cultural Affairs group, this new quarter will celebrate art in all its forms, incorporating installations by renowned national and international artists into the urban landscape. More than just a gallery, it will be an invitation to discover, enjoy, and experience culture in the heart of the city.
The session at FAUP was a moment of sharing, reflection, and dialogue on the future of this project, which is now beginning to take shape and aspires to integrate art actively into Porto’s urban life.
With the presence of Cultural Affairs, responsible for the artistic curation of Porto Art Square, and several of the artists who will take part in the project, we discussed the role of art in public spaces and the impact it can have on how we inhabit and experience the city.
There was also an initial debate on the future of the project and the role of art in public space, with the participation of Pedro Baganha, Councillor at Porto City Council, who shared the municipality’s vision for that area of the city and reinforced the importance of culture as a strategic axis for urban development.
It was, without a doubt, an important step towards the realisation of this new cultural destination.
